Politically correct

After the release of his Telugu film Raksha, Ram Gopal Varma is set to make another Telugu film titled Rakhta Charitra. The film will be made on the controversial death of the Telugu Desam-backed politician Paritala Ravi. Ravi was killed in mysterious circumstances three years ago.
Our source says, "Ramu is pretty kicked about the subject and has done immense research on the subject along with his team of writers. The film is based on the Rayalseema faction and centers around Paritala Ravi who was a Telugu Desam-backed politician, a name that sends shivers down every people’s backs. Ravi was killed three years ago by his rivals after congress government assumed power in Andhra Pradesh."
When contacted Ram Gopal Varma says, "Ravi’s life story is absolutely interesting and when I got to know about his life and the threat to his life, I was very fascinated. His brother and father were killed and he was on the verge of becoming a naxalite and from there his journey into politics. Ravi was finally gunned down, it is and incredible story to be filmed."
When asked if the subject would not incite controversies, Ramu says, "My intention is to capture the sprit of the man and his surroundings, rather than the politics around him. When we make a film like Company, Dawood and Chota Rajan - it’s the person we focus on. We don’t venture into the controversial aspects of Hindu and Muslim divide. We deal with emotions and situations that make them what they are.
Similarly, in Rakhta Charitra my reference point is his life, emotions and that a man like him existed in the first place. Controversies are bound to be there since there were conspiracies and theories surrounding his death and his life. But most importantly, it is about the sprit of the man. He is said to be the most ruthless political gangster in our country and was responsible for so many deaths."
Ramu finally says, "We have been researching on his life for over a year now and I have met many people who knew him at close quarters. I met his associates and many policemen, and complied all the information into a script. The film will be directed by Dharma-Shetra as they belong to the same place and they can do justice for it but I will be completely involved in the film in all the aspects."
The shooting of the film will start in November in Rayalseema region in Andhra Pradesh and will be shot in real locations. The film will star all newcomers and will be produced by Ram Gopal Varma and One More Thought Productions along with whom Ramu made Phoonk and Raksha.
Who was Paritala Ravi?
Originally a naxalite, Paritala Ravi joined the mainstream politics in 1993, by response to a call by the then chief minister NT Rama Rao to shun the gun and join the mainstream.
He then switched over loyalties to the Chandrababu Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1996. Though he survived about half a dozen attempts on his life, Ravi was finally gunned down on January 24, 2005 by rival-faction led by Maddilacheruvu Suryanarayana (alias Suri) from close quarters when he was coming out of the party office in Anantapur.
He sensed the possibility of attack on him and shifted his residence permanently to Film Nagar in Hyderabad, where he was living in a highly secured zone. During the TDP regime, Paritala faced allegations of eliminating more than 12 enemies, enjoying indirect support from sections of police.
While surrendering before the police, Suri stated that he wanted to become a hero by killing Paritala, who had huge clout. Presently, his wife Paritala Sunita is representing the Penugonda constituency.

JVV challenges RGV

Sustaining the fire against the movie ‘Raksha’, rationalist forum Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV) on Wednesday sent hair-strands and nail clippings of an 11-year-old girl to the film’s director Ram Gopal Varma and challenged him to perform black magic. The bizarre step came in the aftermath of Mr.Varma’s claim to pay Rs.20 lakh to whoever informs him how to prove black magic.
The movie raked up a controversy for its alleged reinforcement of superstitions associated with sorcery.
“Already, innumerable atrocities are being committed in the name of black magic, and a majority of the victims are Dalits.
Considering the powerful presence of visual media, such irresponsible attitude of film makers and directors needs to be condemned strongly,” said T. Ramesh, general secretary of JVV State wing.
Mr. Ramesh also challenged the movie maker to have them arrested as they were planning to pirate the movie and watch it too.
This was in response to a warning that says those who produce or watch the pirated version would be subject to black magic within 3 hours and 27 minutes.

Chiru hunts for heroines

When he was a movie star, heroines lined up to act with Chiranjeevi. In his new role as a politician, however, he is finding it difficult to rope in a heroine to campaign for his party. Unlike other political parties, where heroines of yesteryears are heading women’s wings, Chiranjeevi’s party is facing a shortage of a female face. Even though actor Suhasini’s name did the rounds for some time, there was no concrete result. After she denied that she was joining the PR, the party’s camp managers have now launched a hunt for a veteran heroine who can campaign for the party.
Even though, the Congress and the Telugu Desam are not led by film personalities, the women’s department of both the parties have yesteryear’s film heroines on their side. The TD women’s wing, Telugu Mahila’s president, Roja, was a known film actor in Telugu and Tamil film industry. She unsuccessfully contested in the 2004 Assembly elections. The Congress state leadership succeeded in adding glamour to the party by roping in yesteryear heroines Jeevitha and Jayasudha.
Telugu cine hero, Rajsekhar and his actor wife Jeevitha, had joined the Congress a few months ago.
Another top heroine, Jayasudha, has also pledged her support for the Congress. The PR leaders are now seeking a heroine to head the party’s women wing. Suhasini, Sumalata, Madhavi, Vijayashanti, Radha, Radhika, Roja and Nagma were the top heroines who acted with Chiranjeevi.
Now Vijayashanti is espousing the Telangana cause and Radhika is with the DMK. Sumalata married Ambarish, a former Union minister from Karnataka, whereas Madhavi settled in United States. Radha’s whereabouts are not known. Almost all the heroines who acted with the actor are now busy in their new endeavours. This has made it difficult for the new politician to find a suitable heroine who to add glamour to the Praja Rajyam.
